Child Counseling – The Need in Modern Times

Most people think that mental illness is only related to adults. As society moves on, it becomes difficult to maintain a healthy family life and work-life balance resulting in adults suffering from anxiety and depression. It is true that adults face mental health problems, but children’s mental health is equally important.

While most adults try to combat everyday stress and anxiety, we often overlook our children’s mental health. Most of us assume that childhood is the most comfortable time. It is highly unlikely that children will suffer from mental health problems and illnesses. Student life is getting complicated day by day. Childhood should be a happy time in a person’s life. Dealing with mental and emotional illness, however, can interrupt this carefree time. It can affect and cause more problems in adults.

While children can experience the same amount of stress and depression as adults, the symptoms may differ from adults. For example, instead of being calm, a child suffering from depression may have unexplained outbursts and behavioral concerns.

There can be many reasons for mental and emotional anxiety in children. These can include things like meeting new people, parental divorce, death, bereavement, abuse, poverty, problems at school, and trouble with peers. However, some disorders can be hereditary and can also be caused by genetic factors.

Child counseling or youth counseling is a type of counseling that focuses on children with mental disorders or behavioral concerns. Guidance is needed to help children achieve optimum achievement and adequate adjustment in various life situations. Child counselors can help children become mentally and emotionally stable, which can help them grow into healthy and happy adults.

Counselors today work with children using a variety of therapies such as play therapy, individual counseling, group therapy, and art and craft therapy. Through these activities, children tend to express many of their thoughts and emotions, and counselors can also tap into concerns. This can only happen when we ourselves realize that counseling is a means through which we can help ourselves and live a healthy life.

Children face a variety of problems at school, from body shaming to bullying to peer pressure. Tests are meant to show kids how they are better at a subject, in today’s scenario, but low scores make them suffer stress and depression.

Child counselors work for and with children. The atmosphere of a counseling session is made more friendly and comfortable rather than a setting where they adapt to the fear of speaking up. Counseling helps children express themselves better and feel safe while expressing their thoughts and needs in isolation from their near and dear ones. Like adults, children feel pressured to live up to society’s norms based on their age. Sometimes the need to fit in with the group increases and the inability to do so leads to disturbing thoughts and self-doubt. It affects their self-concept and character formation.
